Working in domains

Tourmaline has three ‘domains’. Each domain consists of a number of professionals: teachers, pedagogical staff, subject teachers, a team supervisor and of course children.

Own mentor

Every child at Tourmaline has its own mentor. The mentor is responsible for the development of the child and the contact with the parent. However, the supervision of the children takes place in collaboration with all employees of a domain. Every employee has his own expertise. This way your child gets music lessons from a professional teacher at Tourmaline and learns to sing from someone who can do it very well, dance lessons get the children of a specialist teacher dance and the technique lessons are given by a passionate employee of the Science Node Delft.

Tailor-made program

At Toermalijn each child follows an individual tailor-made program. That does not mean that there are no group moments. Every child belongs to a tribe group. Musical, creative and sports activities take place in a group. But there is also room, for example, to get an individual instruction for arithmetic or spelling. We look for the best for every child. We reflect on the work several times a day. What went well? Where is help needed? How did the collaboration go?

Tailor-made education

We live in a rapidly changing world, while education still has almost the same form as at the beginning of the education law in 1857. However, children learn and develop differently, and technological developments also make a different offer of education possible. It is being thought out globally which skills should be given a place in education. It is not only about cognitive skills but also about so-called conative skills. These are skills that appeal to knowledge and control of yourself and knowledge and skills to deal with others.

Much research has been done into the effectiveness and quality of education. For example, we know that a teacher who tells a group the least effective form of learning is that the learning efficiency increases by experiencing and working together.

We give shape to them at Tourmaline, by making tailor-made education.

That is why we have chosen to organize our education differently. No longer learning from 1 teacher, with 30 children in a group, with the same lesson material from a book. At Toermalijn every child has a tailor-made program. Several professionals teach, children follow their own learning path and learn from each other. They learn while they research and design, their curiosity is stimulated and stimulated. Our new building (which we hope to involve at the end of 2019) has studios, a theater, music rooms, a science room, language and calculation rooms, quiet workplaces, moving places, a school garden, and much more. Until that time we give good shape in the current building.

Children on Tourmaline work with digital support for tablets from Snappet. Snappet is a tablet that digitally provides the material for all core subjects. The tablet offers children’s teaching material on a differentiated level, making it very well suited to our vision of working at your own level. The teachers continue to give the instruction, but the processing is done on the tablet. Children receive direct feedback on the answers and can immediately improve the assignment. Through a dashboard, the teacher immediately sees which children have difficulty with an assignment, so they can immediately give extra instruction if necessary.

Working thematically

At Tourmaline we work with themes. Each theme is viewed from different disciplines; from geography, history, biology, technology, social studies, physics, chemistry and philosophy.

The children are automatically involved in making connections, learning to analyze them, they see the structures that keep coming back and recognize them. They can also evaluate this, they discover the relationship with other themes and they can place what they have learned in a different context. They thus develop the higher thinking. In thematic work we can differentiate beautifully and stimulate and develop the talents of children.

Talent development

Children are different, and we must use those differences. We do not say for nothing: “Children only have equal chances when they are guided differently”.

In the child center, the children have 6 hours of extra lessons every week in what we call ‘TOS subjects’. ‘TOS’ stands for ‘Talent Development School’. It stands for the importance we attach to creativity, sport and culture, and the opportunity that all children need to get acquainted with. In this way they can discover and develop talents in themselves.

We have specialist teachers for sports, music, technology, dance / theater and visual arts. ‘Programming’ is a component that we are currently developing a continuous line on: from group 1, children learn how to program and move objects!

The TOS lessons are linked to the themes that are discussed in the domains.

Masterclass

Children with a special talent are given the opportunity to further develop their talents after school. Together with external partners (Het Talenthuis and theater De Regentes) we organize lessons in which a group of talented children work together on a performance. This show is being performed in school and at Jonker Frans care home (which we have “adopted” and with which we organize annual activities).

Summer school

Every year we organize a Summer School. For two weeks, during the summer holidays, the children are taught in a special way. The summer school is a school where you learn with your head, your heart and your hands. We research and design, we go everywhere, we try everything, we learn to think critically with feeling and respect for others, and we learn to write down and defend our opinion.

Because we organize the school with a number of other schools, the children also get to know many other children. Enrollment starts around April, the children receive a registration form. We have space for 80 children every year.

Nederlandse les anderstaligen

Toermalijn vangt kinderen op in de zogenaamde ‘neveninstroom’. Kinderen die uit het buitenland komen en nog geen Nederlands spreken, krijgen bij ons speciale ondersteuning.

Ze werken in een domein, waar ze meedraaien met de andere kinderen, maar daarnaast krijgen ze een aantal uur per dag les in de NT2 klas. Hier werken ze in kleine groepjes aan hun eigen programma onder begeleiding van een speciaal hiervoor geschoolde leerkracht.

We bieden ook gratis Nederlandse les aan voor ouders die de taal nog niet (goed) beheersen. Twee middagen in de week krijgen ouders in ons gebouw les van een leerkracht, onder het genot van een kopje thee of koffie.
